"HEAD AND BARE SHOULDER PORTRAITS OF PEOPLE WHO - IN THE FACE OF BREXIT - FEEL THIS COUNTRY NO LONGER REPRESENTS THEIR BEST INTEREST" -Uta Kogelsberger
Using a large billboard, Uta (and her team) would continuously paste portraits of people who feel alienated within the country, many of whom have decided to move out of the UK, as if they no longer belong due to Brexit. She gives a voice to these individuals that have been silenced by the failing democratic processes. By overlaying each portrait, quarter by quarter, each face would intermingle with the one beneath it and then the one on top of it, gradually building up layers of people in the same situation.
While I was at the exhibition, a group of ladies appeared too, I found them quite intriguing as they were all quite eccentric and a little 'kooky'. I watched them for a little bit and found that one ladies was wearing a EU flag hat (with the ring of yellow stars) and a t-shirt said, "BREXIT IS TOXIC", I thought this was quite fitting as the theme of the piece was based around Brexit, also it seems as though the phrase is an attempt at rhyming or providing a catchy slogan, It didn't work in my opinion as there are many others that would work better eg 'exit brexit', slightly more catchy. I also loved how they documented the exhibition by taking a selfie with the billboard in the background, I found that this was like having another member of the group, another subject of the selfie.
We came across the lady in pink again a little later on, in the afternoon, at a discussion we went to based on the influence Brexit has on the arts. In this discussion the panel debated the value and morals in Brexit, (only one member of the panel was pro Brexit, with 4 against) at various points in the talk people would make their opinions known, whether on the panel or not, one of which was the woman in pink, she seemed to be very passionate on the topic, asking the member of the panel that was pro-Brexit various questions beginning with 'why' based around Brexit. I found the encounter with this woman quite stimulating as I found myself evaluating her and her questions (not in a judgemental way but a compelling way), I found it interesting how you had this 'kooky' lady, a little eccentric in nature, so passionate about this serious situation to the point of protest at the mere mention of Pro-Brexit.
